What to expect from an Alaska garden season

Blog

If you join a weekly or biweekly CSA, what can you really expect to find in your box each week?

Because many of our grocery store veggies travel thousands of miles to get to us, we have lost touch with what is seasonal and what isn’t. While high tunnels and starting seeds indoors in the spring can speed things up, there are many veggies that just take time.

At our farm, we do our best to get a jump on the season with four high tunnels, three hoop houses and a heated nursery for our baby starts. But even with all that infrastructure, some vegetables, like tomatoes, aren’t available until later in the season.

In addition, some veggies have a hard time in the middle of the summer when Alaska’s long days and warmth cause plants to grow too fast. There are some crops, like spinach, that we only grow in the spring and the fall.

So what can you expect from Homer Hilltop Farm this season? Every year is a little different, but in general, we know when to expect certain veggies to be ready for your dinner table. Here’s the inside scoop on what you can expect to find in your CSA veggie box.

Homer Hilltop Farm vegetable harvest schedule, detailing seasonal availability of various vegetables from May to October, including salad mixes, kale, broccoli, carrots, and more.
