Let us help you start your 2021 garden off right!

Blog

Hey everyone! We made it to February! Hope you are enjoying the extra 5 minutes a day of sunlight as much as I am, even if it is bitterly cold today.

If you are like me, there is nothing like a long winter’s night to start dreaming of spring and sinking my hands into the soil again.

I’ve spent many nights by the fire with a pile of seed catalogs, imagining beautiful rows of plants that look just like the ones in the shiny catalog.

But that’s not always how it turns out because, well, this is Alaska, isn’t it?

We either have not enough sun, or, come June, too much. Our soil goes from a frozen brick to dry as a desert. Some years are cold and wet, others hot and arid. It’s the land of extremes. Alaska tests us all, but especially our fragile, little plants. And with the short growing season we have here in Homer, you don’t have time for your vegetable and flower starts to dawdle.

Homer Hilltop Farm would like to help.

We’ve tried (and failed) a whole lot over the past decade!

We know which broccoli bolts under the midnight sun and which thrives, which tomato plants will actually make ripe fruit and which will leave you eating a bounty of fried green tomatoes, and which lettuce gets bitter almost instantly.

We know how and when to start plants so they have the best chance of tuning into delicious, beautiful food and flowers for you and your family.

Last year, we saw a huge upsurge in people wanting to grow their own food. We’re so excited to see so many people returning to gardening!

That’s why we are expanding our offerings this year to include the healthiest, organically grown vegetable and flower starts ready to get you off and running as soon as the soil warms.

You can reserve you starts now on our website and will be adding more varieties as we plant. Some early starts will be available starting mid-April for those of you with greenhouses and we will continue planting extra starts for Homer gardeners throughout the season.

If there’s any way we can help your 2021 garden dreams become reality, please let us know.

We're so excited to help you have your best garden ever in 2021!
